Tragic Heroes
Aristotle's Tragic hero
Aristotle's definition of a tragic hero is
"a person who must evoke a sense of pity and fear in the audience. He is considered as a man of misfortune that comes to him through error or judgement."

Aristotle also explains that a tragic hero must have the following characteristics:

-
Famous
-
Loved
-
Noble
-
Wealthy
Miller's modern tragic hero
Unlike Aristotle, Arthur Miller believed that suitable subjects for a tragedy were not men of nobility, but rather a common man in modern society.

Miller defines a hero as "anybody who is willing to lay down his life in order to secure his 'sense of personal dignity'." Regardless of background or social status, anyone can be a hero.

Modern tragic heroes struggle within their social environment and fight against the masses to obtain their rightful place in society.
