Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World takes place in Central London in the AF or “after Ford” era referring to Henry Ford’s assembly line. The novel examines a futuristic society, called the World State, that revolves around science and efficiency. In this society, emotions and individuality are conditioned out of children at a young age, and there are no lasting relationships because “every one belongs to every one else”.

One day at a crossroad full of people, a man makes thee revelation that everything around him was wrong: traffic lights, uniforms, posters… and he used to accept them as a necessity. He calls out to the crowd to stop and to tell them that everything was wrong. The people stop and ask him what is wrong since they see that everything was right and in its place, but he couldn’t utter a sound as his revelation had simply disappeared. At this moment he sees that everything is in place again and thinks that he was the one that was wrong. However, he often hopes that he will make the same discovery again that nothing was right.

The protagonist Mathilde Loisel is an unappreciative individual who lives in Paris, France. One day, Mathilde and her husband gets invited to a formal party from the Ministry of Education. Her instant reaction was anger and tears because she is worried about the outfit that she is going to wear. Even after her husband buys a dress for her, she does not get satisfied due to lack of jewels. Fortunately, her friend allows her to borrow jewels but Mathilde ends up losing it. Instead of telling the truth, she suffers 10 years to buy the jewelry from a store and finds out that the jewelry that she lost was a fake one.
Hills Like White Elephats

Ernest Hemingway's Hills Like White Elephants, opens up at a train station surrounded by hills, fields, trees, in a valley in Spain. There is an American man and his girlfriend at a bar sitting. They discuss about an operation with the "jig", meaning child. The man wants his girlfriend to have an operation, but she'll do it if he'll still love her and live together. Then, the girlfriend claims that she'll do it and not care about herself after the operation. The man emphasizes about his love and care towards her, and realizes that she shouldn't have the operation. He asks the girl whether she feels better. She says she feels fine and that there is nothing wrong with her.
1984

“1984” written by George Orwell depicts a society where media consolidation is highly present. The story follows our main protagonist, Winston Smith, as he finds out the truth behind the past and unravels the mysteries of his society, which makes us question. Is our society today different from Orwell’s interpretation?
